Dana also designs and supplies fully custom electronic controllers to the specific requirements of our customers.

Visit us on stand 2025 to meet our representatives and discuss how our products and services can support your electric and hybrid marine systems development.

Dana will be exhibiting at EVS29 in Montreal, Canada from June 19th to 22nd.

Visit us on stand 205 where you can view a functional EV supervisory control demo using the OpenECU M220 controller in a representation of single-motor and transmission driveline system.
Included in this demo system, performing the role of power inverter, is Dana’s GaN Motor Controller board. With the drive toward electrification of traditionally mechanical auxiliary vehicle systems, the potential efficiency benefits of using gallium nitride semiconductors for motor control and power switching devices are beginning to be realized. Speak with a Dana representative on our booth to discuss where this groundbreaking technology can improve your EV systems.

You will also be able to see samples of our OpenECU controllers and discuss  with our representatives where OpenECU can enable development of advanced EV systems.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Come  and visit us on stand 1707 where you can view an EV driveline demo using the OpenECU M220 controller in a representative system from our distribution partner Electricmotorsport.

You will also be able to see a sample of our latest OpenECU controller, the M110, and discuss  with our representatives where it can fit in your application.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Gordan Jurasek, Dana senior hardware engineer, will be discussing novel BLDC motor control design for mixed voltage.
This presentation discusses the design challenges and optimization choices necessary in the development of a brushless DC motor controller intended for use in hybrid and electric drive applications. The need to provide precise, high-power motor control for 12V, 24V, 48V and 300V+ systems in a common electronics design presents some unique challenges and drives the use of new materials and techniques, making this an exciting engineering project and resulting in a high-value solution for systems integrators in the hybrid and electric marine industry.

Dana is drawing upon its extensive background in the automotive and commercial vehicle industries, and experience with marine electronics certification, to provide electric and hybrid powertrain control solutions for the marine market. The recently launched M670 OpenECU controller is an idea platform for companies looking for an integrated system supervisor, with extensive I/O and four communication buses that are compatible with NMEA2000, J1939, ISO CAN, and CANopen protocols. To complement the OpenECU® hardware, Dana has also developed a set of Simulink® software hybrid and electric powertrain core control strategies that are available as source code or as part of a delivered controller. The strategy architecture takes account of a wide range of possible powertrain configurations, and carries out the core task of translating operator demanded input into propulsion torque output, based on powertrain component configurations and their relative availability at any given time. A framework is provided in the software to interface the core logic with the specific system of interest, and a range of fault codes are also made available for use by system developers and maintenance operatives. Dana provides OpenECU hardware and software components as development tools for customers that have the resources to use them within their own projects for development and production, but also offers engineering consultancy services to help realize the technical goals of its customers.

See you in Fort Lauderdale!

12:35 – Challenges in Designing a Generic ECU

ECU development is a complex multidisciplinary endeavor that offers many areas for trade-off and compromise. This presentation covers lessons learned designing an ECU for use in a broad range of production and prototyping applications. Dana recently launched the M670 to provide rapid prototyping and low-volume production engine control for PFI, GDI and CRD applications. The design of the M670 was targeted at supporting R&D groups and established niche productions. The struggle meeting the needs of advanced engine technology development and low-cost production will be discussed, with a review of selected key circuits and their impact on the overall ECU design.

Dana will be at booth E148 on the Engine Expo side of the exhibit hall.

For 2018 and subsequent model year engines, complying with OBD II regulations in the US is a requirement potentially posing significant challenges to alternative fuel vehicle manufactures.  Introducing a major functionality such as OBD to software that was not originally designed to address this need can cause significant architectural changes to the software design.   Managing and communicating faults in a manner that meets all the regulatory OBD requirements is a significantly complex task.  Dana has developed what we call our OBD Infrastructure Software specially designed for DTC life cycle management, storage, and reporting of OBD data, diagnostic tool interface, In Use Performance Ratios and handling all the other aspects of regulatory OBD.  The Dana software abstracts the application level OBD tasks from the background OBD tasks that are independent of the application.  These background tasks execute as part of a lower-level OBD infrastructure pre-built into the embedded controls API rather than burdening the higher-level controls application.   The software is sold as a Simulink control model and OBD abstraction blockset.  For customers needing assistance in monitor development as well as the OBD infrastructure software, Dana offers a full range of engineering services to support implementation.

Chad Lehner, Program Manager, will be presenting “OBD Infrastructure Software Architecture” at L-NGV San Diego on June 17, 2015. Join him as he demonstrates Dana’s knowledge of OBD as relevant to the alternative fuel market, what could be impacted in the market, and how Dana can help you develop solutions for your business.

11:45 – Designing-in safety on a flexible hardware platform

David Price, CTO, Dana, UK

Safety is all about the details. Therefore, when a specific application is developed, a detailed analysis is undertaken identifying applicable hazards and application-specific safety requirements. When the application is undefined, the challenge is to develop a supporting platform that is application neutral, cost effective and designed with safety in mind. This presentation explains Pi’s approach to identifying and implementing key common safety requirements on a flexible application-neutral platform with reference to ISO26262 and, more specifically, EGAS requirements. The paper will cover hardware and software safety elements from the context of a defined platform acting as a safety element out of context.
After David’s presentation, visit Dana at stand 3020 for more info on what’s to come in safety requirements and how we can help prepare you and your product to meet these standards. Also debuting at Engine Expo Stuttgart is the M670, the latest and most versatile ECU in the OpenECU family!
