Congratulations to University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Formula SAE Team “MRacing” on their 5th place finish, 1st among U.S. competitors, in the Formula SAE event on May 13th, 2017 at Michigan International Speedway.

The 2017 MRacing vehicle utilizes a 600cc turbocharged powertrain and an automated pneumatic shifting system managed by an OpenECU M220 ECU. Students used the OpenECU Simulink API to design and prototype shifting system algorithms with automatic shifting and torque-cut clutchless upshifts.

“The OpenECU tools from Dana have enabled us to pursue projects complex projects in a simple fashion. The M220 ECU’s interface as well as Dana’s Simulink API allow for ease of code development and testing. Using these tools and the help of Dana we have been able to successfully improve old projects and implement new ones year after year,” commented Vishal Subrahmanyam, student from the University of Michigan.

OpenECU has a proven track record with MRacing for this and previous competition years due to its rugged, reliable hardware, and full-featured user-customizable software. Dana congratulates MRacing on their strong finish at Michigan, and wish them best of luck at their upcoming competitions in Barrie, Ontario, and Barcelona, Spain this summer!

Dana and UQM recently announced collaboration on the UQM PowerPhase® DT Drivetrain. This project has led to the important next step of adding the central Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) to the UQM system. UQM will now be offering its customer base more key components of the electric vehicle drivetrain.

This new Dana VCU will have key features such as torque based control architecture, vehicle stability system integration, battery management, regeneration, and thermal management and will eliminate the need for UQM’s customers to source, program and supply the central vehicle controller on their own.

Both companies will be presenting the merits of a combined UQM/Dana product offering at the upcoming Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo 2016, the premier USA showcase for electric and hybrid vehicle technology and innovation. The show will held on September 13-15, in Novi, Michigan.

electric drivetrain system

LONGMONT, COLORADO, JUNE 16, 2016 – UQM Technologies, Inc. (NYSE MKT:UQM) announced today that UQM has officially begun a development and production program with Eaton’s Vehicle Group and Dana, both located in Michigan. The alliance calls for Eaton to develop and supply to UQM a 2-speed transmission for an EV application, and Dana will develop and supply to UQM the transmission control unit. Together, the components will be combined with UQM’s current PowerPhase® HD220/HD250 motor and inverter system to create a full electric drivetrain system called the “UQM PowerPhaseDT”.

The benefits of the system will allow customers in the medium and heavy-duty EV commercial markets to achieve increased performance in areas of gradability, acceleration and efficiency.
UQM will have prototypes ready for customers by early fall and start-of-production units ready by early 2017.

The development and production of a full electric drivetrain system will support the overarching need for full transmission systems as enhanced performance and efficiency requirements are mandated by customer drive cycle needs as well as the need to reduce battery costs and meet more stringent environmental regulations.

motor controller announcement

The current issue of Charged EVs magazine is carrying an article on Dana and GaN Systems’ recent collaboration on a gallium nitride semiconductor-based motor controller design intended to demonstrate the benefits benefits of GaN Systems semiconductors in applications with a wide range of input voltages from 12V to 300V.

This controller design provides a functional starting-point for the development of 48V and above, high-speed motor-driven vehicle systems and is targeted at companies working on the electrification of auxiliary vehicle systems.

Charged EVs magazine is the essential source for keeping up to date on technology and infrastructure developments in the world of electric vehicles, and Dana is proud to be featured in their latest publication.

Dana introduced the latest controller to join its highly versatile and successful OpenECU family of embedded controllers on stand 1707 at the Alternative Clean Transportation Expo 2016 on May 2nd.

The M110 is a 40-pin, multi-purpose module with a wide range of capabilities and is aimed at systems developers who need a controller with multiple CAN, LIN, SENT and analog I/O that can be configured to suit a variety of applications such as Can-to-CAN and Can-to-LIN gateway, CAN I/O expansion and smart relay driver, among many typical vehicle system controls. It’s SENT capabilities also provide for sensor spoofing where a non-SENT system is utilizing a SENT device sensor or actuator, supporting rapid control prototyping of mixed-protocol systems. These features, with the addition of analog outputs make the M110 a useful tool for developers of alternate fuel vehicle storage and delivery system controls, autonomous vehicle systems integration, diagnostics and health and utilization monitoring systems.

As with the other controllers in the OpenECU family, the M110 can form the basis of a custom ECU design to meet the specific requirements of a production controller, providing an accelerated path into volume supply. Speak to a Dana representative for more information on this innovative approach to custom electronics development.

Gordan Jurasek, Senior Hardware Engineer

Dana Senior Hardware Engineer Gordan Jurasek presented at the 2016 Electric and Hybrid Marine World Expo in Fort Lauderdale. He discussed the design challenges and optimization choices necessary in the development of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor controller intended for use in hybrid and electric drive applications. The need to provide precise, high-power BLDC motor control for 12V, 24V, 48V and 300V+ systems in a common electronics design presents some unique challenges and drives the use of new materials and techniques, making this an exciting engineering project and resulting in a high-value solution for system integrators in the hybrid and electric marine industry.
